The Players may not have the cache of the British Open or PGA Championship, but its combination of iconic backdrop and massive prize purse means the game’s best players treat it like the fifth major that never was. It’s one of the game’s most recognizable tournaments: an event held in mid-May that connects the months between the Masters and U.S. Open. The Stadium Course plays host to nearly 40,000 spectators, and millions more will watch on television as a deep field competes for a $10.5 million purse.

Last year, Australian Jason Day confirmed his place in the game’s upper echelon with a four-stroke triumph. It was the event’s largest margin of victory since 2009, and it netted Day $1.89 million in prize money. While he’ll be among the favorites when action begins Thursday, Sergio Garcia may just be TPC’s safest bet.

Garcia had his long-awaited breakthrough when he earned his first major tournament win at the 2017 Masters, but TPC Sawgrass has long been one of his preferred playgrounds. He won The Players back in 2008, has been runner-up twice — most recently in 2015 — and was third in 2014. While he finished 17 strokes off the lead at last year’s event, he’s playing the best golf of his life after a career-affirming victory at Augusta.

The Players took a long path to emerge as one of the game’s biggest events. TPC Sawgrass was just 415 acres of marshland 40 years ago, before Pete Dye and his wife, Alice, molded it into a unique and unforgiving championship golf course. Sawgrass takes elements from storied courses across the globe, combining features like St. Andrews’ pot bunkers and Augusta’s pavement-fast putting surfaces to frustrate players.

The jewel of the course is the 17th hole: a par-3 that challenges players with an undulating island green. Swirling wind and a small landing zone make the 132-yard hole a challenge, and its placement at the end of the course can mean heartache for anyone unlucky enough to find the drink in the fourth round.
