It was a rollercoaster of a game, but Arsenal nicked a late winner at home to Leicester City last Friday to kick off their Premier League campaign with a win. They’ll hope for rather more routine success on Saturday, when they travel to the bet365 Stadium to take on Mark Hughes’ Stoke City.

Stoke’s start was rather more underwhelming, the Potters going down 1-0 to Everton at Goodison Park. It was a reasonably tight game, and they’ve got little reason for immediate concern. However, we’ve seen in previous seasons the importance of building momentum early on, and they’ll certainly be hoping to give Arsenal a good game on Saturday. Jesé could be handed his Potters debut after joining on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Stoke will be without Julien Ngoy, who is injured; Stephen Ireland and Ibrahim Afellay both face late fitness tests. Still on the treatment table for Arsenal are Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sánchez, while Laurent Koscielny is suspended. Per Mertesacker, Shkodran Mustafi, Jack Wilshere, Francis Coquelin, Kieran Gibbs and Gabriel are all doubts.

It hasn’t been a stellar tournament for Stefan Kuntz’s team as they just managed to scrape into the final two, but one thing they have shown is unity as a team and they seem to have that in abundance.

Kuntz was dealt a big blow with the majority of the squad been promoted to the senior side for the Confederations Cup, and despite that they started well with comfortable victories over the Czech Republic and Denmark.

They did suffer defeat to Italy in their final group game but had done enough to qualify and set up a tie with England in the semi-finals, but that was certainly more than an test as the tie went all the way to penalties after the 2-2 draw in extra-time.

Young goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck was the hero as he saved two spot kicks to set up this tie, though they look to be the underdogs Kuntz has stated that he wants to test his side against the best.

The 10th FIFA Confederations Cup will kick off on Saturday in Russia when the host nation faces New Zealand at Krestovsky Stadium in St. Petersburg.

The Confederations Cup is an eight-team tournament that features the winners of six regional confederation championships, the defending World Cup champion and the upcoming World Cup host nation. The tournament is held in the nation that will host the next year’s World Cup.

TASS-FACTBOX. The main annual international football tournament among national teams – the FIFA Confederations Cup – kicks off in Russia on June 17.

The FIFA Confederations Cup is a tournament among national football teams held under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in the country that will also host the World Cup in 2018. Russia won the right to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup and automatically became the host of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup as well.

The 2017 Federations Cup organizing committee is chaired by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Russian Football Union Vitaly Mutko.

National teams of Russia (the 2018 FIFA World Cup host), Germany (the winner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup), Portugal (the champion of the UEFA Euro 2016), Chile (the winner of the 2015 Copa America), Australia (the 2015 AFC Asian Cup winner; Football Federation Australia has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation since 2006), Mexico (the winner of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup; in October 2015, Mexico defeated the US (the champion of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup) in the play-off match for the right to represent CONCACAF in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup), New Zealand (the champion of the 2016 OFC Nations Cup) and Cameroon (the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winner) will take part in the tournament.

The current Confederations Cup holder, Brazil’s team, were knocked out of the 2015 Copa America in the quarter-finals and lost the opportunity to defend their title which they earned in 2013.

Four stadiums will host the Confederations Cup games: Spartak Stadium (located in Moscow; named “Otkritie Arena” in 2014, when it was opened, and renamed as “Spartak Stadium” for the time of the tournament), St Petersburg Stadium, Fisht Stadium and Kazan Arena. The tournament’s final will be held in St. Petersburg, whereas the third place play-off will be held in Moscow.

2017 Confederations Cup features

Ticket sales for the tournament began on November 8, 2016. After buying a tournament ticket, each football fan must obtain a fan identification document (Fan ID). Russia started issuing Fan IDs on February 1, 2017. A Fan ID provides access to the matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 and a free travel pass.

On May 1, 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order to change the visa scheme. Foreign tournament participants are granted ordinary humanitarian visas for multiple entries, whereas individuals who help to prepare and organize the Confederations Cup are granted ordinary multiple-entry business visas or ordinary multiple-entry work visas. Under Russian law, foreign spectators can enter the country visa-free, with only identification documents and a Fan ID. This regime will operate 72 hours ahead of the Confederations Cup’s first match and will be lifted on the day of the tournament’s last match (from June 14 to July 2, 2017).

During the tournament, FIFA plans to test the Hawk-Eye video assistant referee technology and a fourth substitution during extra time.

New Zealand striker Chris Wood will captain the squad after West Ham defender Winston Reid was forced out with a knee injury. Wood was top-scorer in England’s second-tier last season. Bill Tuiloma of Marseilles will be a stabilizing influence in midfield.

Salty Russia defenders Vasily Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich have both left, but their younger replacements have struggled. Fyodor Smolov is the main attacking threat, while fellow forward Alexander Kokorin wasn’t selected. Injuries have depleted the squad, with midfielders Alan Dzagoev and Roman Zobnin missing out, along with forward Artyom Dzyuba.

Russia and New Zealand will open the 2017 Confederations Cup on Saturday at Saint Petersburg Stadium.

The Group A first stage match will be Russia’s Confederations Cup debut, and it will come in front of a home crowd that has already sent thousands of fans to practices ahead of the tournament. If the team can handle the pressure of hosting, it has the chance to start off on the right foot against the Oceania champions. Russia has lost only once in its last five and is the favorite in the opener.

The All Whites are making their fourth appearance in the Confederations Cup, but are yet to tally a victory, recording just a single point in total. The underdogs will rely on striker Chris Wood to lead what has been a defensive squad.

“This is what we do all of the hard work for,” Wood told ahead of the Russia match. “This is why we play all of the hard games in the Islands. … The boys are raring to go and will be up for it.”

The pool also includes Portugal and Mexico, presenting what is likely to be a tough path for either Russia or New Zealand moving through these opening stages.

Since winning the World Cup back in 1966 on home soil, England has underachieved on the global stage.

“It’s our time,” said Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke, who has scored four goals in the tournament. “The determination we have is what drives us on. We know that even if we’re losing, we can bring it back.”

England has won five of six games to get to the final at Suwon World Cup Stadium. After topping Group A with wins over six-time champion Argentina and host South Korea, England has defeated Costa Rica, Mexico and Italy.

The England U20 and the Venezuela U20 have defied all odds and have managed to reach the finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. The two nations will battle it out for top honours later today at the World Cup Stadium in Suwon. This is a big day for the England players in particular as they might finally win a competition on the global stage for the first time since 1966.

Neither nations were never expected to make it this far into the competition in the first place but they have proved through the group and knockout stages that they deserve to be here. England topped their group which consisted of host nation South Korea, Argentina and Guinea.

That 3-1 semifinal victory was the most impressive after Italy took a second-minute lead. England replied with two goals from Solanke and another from Ademola Lookman, who joined English Premier League team Everton in January.

Venezuela was the most impressive performer in the group stage, defeating Mexico, Germany and Vanuatu, scoring 10 goals and not conceding any.

In three knockout stage games, however, the team has needed extra time to eliminate Japan, the United States and Uruguay. Venezuela defeated the South American champion 4-3 in a penalty shootout with goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez the hero.

England look to continue their success in World Cup qualifying when they make the short trip to Hampden Park to meet Scotland. Gareth Southgate has steered England through five qualifying matches, winning four and drawing one, all without conceding a goal. Scotland are placed fourth in Group F, but a surprise win at home could vault them into the coveted runner-up spot.

It’s not particularly often that a matchup with the pride and personal stakes of a Scotland vs. England matchup arises in World Cup Qualifying. However, that’s exactly the situation at hand in the UEFA portion of the proceedings. And on Saturday, June 10, the England side will travel to Hampden Park to take on a Scottish side that would love to topple the ever-prickly giants.

This England side is one of the more loaded groups in recent memory. There are more ways than one that they can beat you, boasting a plethora of skill and simple power. Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and so on all comprise a fearsome attack, and are just the start of it for the English side. What’s more, the enigmatic Joe Hart in goal could put forth an anchoring performance.

Meanwhile, the Scottish side will look to contend with that England attack by dropping back a bit. Robert Snodgrass and co. will look to score surely, but they’ll use a pair of defensive midfielders featuring James McArthur to try and contend with what the English side is able to throw at them.

Saturday’s match will be shown on Fox Sports 2, meaning you have a couple of streaming choices to watch online. First, you can access Fox Sports Go online or through the app, which requires a cable or satellite subscription to log in. There is also the option to use Fubo.TV, but a paid membership is required for the service.

What does he really do? It might seem an odd question to pose about a manager who stands on the brink of history but it’s one some people will still ask.

Zinedine Zidane was a genius as a player, one of the greatest we have ever seen, but so far his career in the dugout has passed without significant acclaim. That is remarkable when you consider what he has done in such a short period of time.

As Juventus star Dani Alves prepares to renew rivalries with Real Madrid once again, he stoked the fires by reminding the public of the

controversial manner in which they won the 1998 final.

That was the last time the sides met in the Champions League, with Los Blancos coming out on top thanks to a lone Predrag Mijatovic goal.

However, Alves has done his homework and claimed that the winning goal shouldn’t have counted as he discussed the 2017 edition in Cardiff.

“[Real Madrid] are not everyone’s favourites; It is not an Alves vs Madrid match, it is a Juventus vs Madrid match,” he told the assembled media. “There is some resentment from playing against them because, with an offside goal, Madrid won [in 1998].”

The Brazilian is one of the most decorated players in footballing history and has a chance to add to his haul during Saturday’s clash.

However, he insisted that his past experience of such important games doesn’t mean he has to shoulder any extra responsibility against Los Blancos.

“I am no more important than anyone else, it is a moment to live and make your own history,” said the former Barcelona defender.

“You have to try and write new pages all the time. Life brought me to this team to try and relive a dream. We’re here to try and share this dream with my teammates

“I don’t think I am one to be giving advice, and even less so to people at Juventus, who have won lots of important trophies. I am an eternal apprentice, I aim to learn from all of them. I think that is our strength.

“You have to do something new every day, I can’t be thinking about becoming the only player with three trebles if we win. Our dream is bigger than that.

“I’m not a person who lives thinking about that. If my environment is fine, then I am fine. My concern is to live up to my teammates. These games are not played, you come and win the cup then take it home.”

Real Madrid and Juventus face off in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

European soccer’s biggest prize is on the line as the Spanish and Italian champions look to cap off their seasons with another trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala will lead their respective forward lines. Legendary Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon has a chance to win the first Champions League title of his storied career.

Real Madrid has won the Champions League two of the last three seasons, beating Atletico Madrid in the final in 2014 and 2016. Juventus made the final in 2015 but lost to Barcelona.

Yes, it’s just a friendly, but the US men’s national team’s match against Venezuela on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium feels a bit more important than their usual exhibition.

The USA will have the advantage with the better roster and the home-field advantage in an intimate atmosphere at the Rio Tinto Stadium. The lone player that will be absent for Bruce Arena in the encounter will be Sporting KC defender, Matt Besler. The Americans will count with some very talented players like John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Tim Ream, DeAndre Yedlin, Fabian Johnson, Christian Pulisic and Bobby Wood who all play in Europe. Pulisic, of course, being the most enticing name because of the outstanding season he had with Borussia Dortmund and because of his massive potential.

The American team will have a strong MLS presence with players like Clint Dempsey and Darlington Nagbe being among the most interesting but will also have Liga MX players on the roster. The three Americans who play across the border on the squad are Omar Gonzalez of Pachuca, Jorge Villafana of Santos Laguna and Paul Arriola of Club Tijuana. This United States team is very formidable and should be able to win this encounter against a tricky South American opponent.

Saturday’s match will be the only chance this USMNT group will have in a game setting to build partnerships, iron out kinks and settle into a system before their important World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago on June 8 and at Mexico on June 11.

Under ideal circumstances, all of the US’s major players would already have a feel for what they’re getting into ahead of Saturday’s match. That’s not quite reality. Though he’s been on the job for over six months, this weekend’s contest will only be Bruce Arena’s fifth match in charge of the USMNT since he replaced Jurgen Klinsmann back in November. Likely qualifying starters Fabian Johnson and DeAndre Yedlin and regular striker Bobby Wood have never been in camp under Arena, and Saturday will be their best opportunity to adapt to his tactics and re-integrate with their international teammates.

For Venezuela, who have already been mathematically eliminated from qualifying for next summer’s World Cup, Saturday’s match will be a good chance to test out some fresh faces in a tough environment. Most of their attention this weekend will actually be on their U-20s, who will play the US in the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup in South Korea a couple of hours after proceedings end in Sandy.

There are some significant (and soap opera-like) story lines to follow as Barcelona take on Alaves in the Copa del Rey championship final on Saturday.

Barcelona ended the La Liga season in second place, failing to claim the title, which went to rival Real Madrid. Lionel Messi’s side also fell short in UEFA Champions League, so they’re especially motivated to take their third Copa del Rey title in a row.

Off-the-field distractions abound as Barcelona also bring some drama to the final. Messi’s 21-month jail sentence for tax fraud was upheld by Spain’s Supreme Court and former club president Sandro Rosell was arrested for money laundering.

And Barcelona are expected to announce a new manager to replace Luis Enrique two days after the match. Media reports rumors that the club already has signed Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde to a two-year deal.

Barcelona vs Alavés: preview

Barcelona and Alavés have the honour of being the central characters in this last official game to be played at the Vicente CalderónAtlético de Madrid’s home for the past 51 years. The Catalans are no strangers to the big occasion; they have won this trophy more than any other club with 28 triumphs from the 38 finals they’ve taken part in. It is a less familiar experience for Alavés, whose only previous acquaintance with a major cup final was the gripping 2001 UEFA Cup final when they gave Liverpool a good run for their money. Coach Mauricio Pellegrino has been through this all before during his playing days at Valencia – as have Gaizka Toqueroand Alexis Ruano, who played in finals with Athletic Club and Valencia respectively.

On a weekend of goodbyes, Luis Enrique will be in charge of his last game with Barcelona and as Gerard Piqué said on the eve of the game, the team wants to give him a decent send-off while Ernesto Valverde appears the man who will be receiving the baton. The 47-year-old coach brings to an end three successful years at Camp Nou in which he has won a clean sweep of domestic and European honours including the past two editions of the Copa del Rey, held at the same venue as today’s.

Barcelona will be keen to make the most of this chance to pick up some silverware after losing the league to Real Madrid but Alavés will be just as determined to make history by winning their first trophy in club history – as long as Pellegrino can help them keep any stage fright under control. History would suggest it will be Barcelonawho will be cracking open the cava in Canaletes later on Saturday night although you never know…

Barcelona team news

Luis Suárez’s season’s over after pulling a thigh muscle in Thursday’s session. He was suspended for the final in any case. Luis Enrique has had all of his available players in this week’s sessions and drafted in B team players Marlon Santos and Àlex Carbonell – the former should be listed when the coach publishes his squad on the morning of the game. Aleix Vidal has also returned to training on Wednesday, his first appearance since he suffered a nasty ankle injury in February, curiously, against Alavés.

Man to watch: Leo Messi. The Argentine will be collecting the ESM Golden Shoe award later this summer for the 37 goals he scored in LaLiga, and he will want to crown a great season, on individual terms, by winning what would be his fifth Copa del Rey winners’ medal. If he gets on the scoresheet on Saturday, Messi will overtake compatriot Alfredo Di Stéfano in the list of all-time scorers in the competition. Both players are currently joint 11th, on 43 goals each. A Barça triumph would also make Messi and Andrés Iniesta the club’s most decorated players, both are eyeing their 30th title with Barça.

Alavés team news

There was heartbreak for centre-back Víctor Laguardia who underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Tuesday. His absence means that Pellegrino will likely field three at the back with Kiko Femenía and Theo Hernández as attacking wing-backs. Carlos Vigaray or Alexis Ruano join Ely and Feddal at the back.

Man to watch: Deyverson. The Brazilian opened his account on his debut against Barcelona in Week 3 in Alavés’ shock 1-2 win at Camp Nou. Deyverson is an archetypal box player, a predator who always seems spring up in the right place when balls are played into the area. He also gave Real Madrid’s defence a tough time in Week 10 so he’s enjoyed success against LaLiga’s big guns already this season.
