A maximum stint length of 80 minutes will be enforced for cars without air-conditioning if ambient temperatures hit 32C.

The Toyota TS050 HYBRID is one of two cars in the race not fitted with air-conditioning, the other being the ByKolles team’s ENS0 CLM-NISMO P1/01.

Some weather forecasts suggest that temperatures in Le Mans could hit 32C on Sunday.

Implementation of the rule, intended as a safety move to prevent driver exhaustion, would remove the ability of Toyota double stint its drivers

A 14-lap stint under green-flag conditions at Le Mans is just under 50 minutes and, last year, Toyota typically quadruple-stinted its drivers.

Toyota driver Sebastien Buemi said: “The problem is that 80 minutes is in the middle of the second stint.

“That means we will have to change drivers at every stint, and that’s a bit of a pain to be honest because you have to change the driver within the refuelling time.

“It’s possible, but it’s not easy. It’s not optimal.”

The complicated packaging of a modern LMP1 hybrid was behind Toyota’s decision not to fit air-con to the latest version of the TS050.

The new rule also dictates a minimum rest time of 30 minutes between stints for drivers of cars without air-con.

The 32C figure is based on the perceived temperature, which also takes humidity into account.

An official temperature will be published two hours before the race and can be modified during the event.

The FIA confirmed late Friday a Balance of Performance adjustment for the GTE-Pro class Porsche 911 RSRs, which sees the mid-engined cars receive an 8 kg weight break. The No. 92 Porsche of Kevin Estre finished second in warmup, seven-tenths slower than the pace-setting No. 69 Ford GT.

It’s believed the FIA and ACO had considered also giving the Fords a post-qualifying BoP adjustment, in the wake of its newly-found top-speed advantage over the GTE-Pro competition. Stefan Mucke was clocked at 300.5 km/h in Qualifying 3.

Despite a strong performance so far this week, Aston Martin Racing Managing Director John Gaw remains cautiously optimistic on the outcome of the BoP in today’s race. “You don’t know until you’re five or six hours into the race whether it’s going to be two-tiered or whether it’s going to be a race,” Gaw told Sportscar365.”If everyone is going to be in the race, will we have the point-one advantage or not?”

Eurasia Motorsport replaced the tub of its Ligier JSP2 17 Gibson following a heavy crash by Erik Maris that brought out the red flag in Qualifying 2 on Thursday. Team boss Mark Goddard told Sportscar365 that he expected the original tub to be repairable, but not in time for this weekend’s race. Ten crew members labored over the car until 4 a.m. on Friday, then returned to work before 10 a.m.

The entire 24 hours of the race will be live streamed live via Fox Sports GO. You’ll need to login to a cable or satellite provider, but it will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, and will run through around that time on Sunday.

Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 will carry television coverage of the race. It will start on FS1 at 8:30 a.m. and will run through 10 a.m. FS2 will take over at 1 p.m. all the way through 1 a.m. on Sunday. There, FS1 will take over again through 9:30 a.m.

Last year, a Toyota TS050 Hybrid was leading the race with less than five minutes to go. An airline leading to the turbo failed and the car came to a stop, allowing the Porsche 919 Hybrid to take the lead and the win for the team and the drivers — Romain Dumas, Neel Jani, and Marc Lieb.

Of those three, Jani is the only one racing in LMP1 this year. In fact, the entry list for LMP1 has shrunk considerably thanks to Audi departing the world of prototype racecars. There are two Porsche 919 Hybrids, three Toyota 5S050 Hybrids, and the privateer car from ByKolles Racing Team, dubbed the ENSO CLM P1/01-Nismo.

Jani teams with Nick Tnady and Andre Lotterer. The other Porsche team is made up of Brendon Harley, Timo Bernhard and Earl Bamber.

Kamui Kobayashi is Toyota’s top driver, or at least one of them. They are favored in this year’s race, same as they were in 2016. Kobayashi qualified fastest in the race, setting several lap records in the process. The No. 8 Toyota qualified in second on the grid, giving the team a front-row lockout.

Plug-in hybrid technology and active aerodynamics will be introduced into the LMP1 division of the World Endurance Championship starting in 2020.

The new technologies were announced for the P1 category Friday alongside a requirement for the cars to complete the first racing kilometer after every pitstop using electric power only. They are part of a rules package for 2020 that has been devised all with cost reduction in mind in an attempt to lure new manufacturers into the category.

LMP1 cars will be able to fast charge their batteries during pitstops. The hybrid-plugin technology is being introduced to reflect developments in the automotive industry.

“It is the conviction of the manufacturers that plug-in hybrids are what they will be selling in five years’ time,” said Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, president of the FIA Endurance Commission “More and more cities are closing their roads to cars that are not zero emissions, so this rule gives a new dimension to our regulations.”

The ‘one-kilometer rule’ also reflects this trend, according to Owen-Jones. He insisted that the cars would complete the first stages of each lap a full racing speeds even without the use of their internal combustion engines.

Owen-Jones revealed that the distance that the cars will have to cover in zero-emissions mode could be increased in future years. LMP1 cars will also have to cross the finish the race only using electrical power.

The introduction of moveable or active aerodynamics is part of the drive to bring down budgets in an attempt to lure new manufacturers into P1. Aero development will be curbed by limiting each manufacturer to one specification of bodywork per season.

FIA technical director Bernard Niclot said: “We consider that if we fix one bodywork for the year we can address the problem of the variety of tracks we race at within a reasonable cost with moveable aerodynamics.”

New caps will be placed on development in the name of cost reduction.

The manufacturers will not be allowed to develop all areas of the car between seasons. Instead there will be a system, akin to the former token arrangement employed for engines in Formula 1, that will allow a set amount of development by each manufacturer.

The number of wind tunnel hours allowed to each manufacturer per calendar year will be reduced from the current 800 to 600.

There will also be further limitations on testing and a drive to organize more collective sessions shared between the manufacturers.

New safety cell rules originally scheduled to be enacted in 2018 will be part of the next cycle of LMP1 rules. The cockpits will be bigger to allow for more space around the driver’s head and the seating position more upright.

FIFA Confederations Cup‬‬ 2017 Live

The 10th FIFA Confederations Cup will kick off on Saturday in Russia when the host nation faces New Zealand at Krestovsky Stadium in St. Petersburg.

The Confederations Cup is an eight-team tournament that features the winners of six regional confederation championships, the defending World Cup champion and the upcoming World Cup host nation. The tournament is held in the nation that will host the next year’s World Cup.

TASS-FACTBOX. The main annual international football tournament among national teams – the FIFA Confederations Cup – kicks off in Russia on June 17.

The FIFA Confederations Cup is a tournament among national football teams held under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in the country that will also host the World Cup in 2018. Russia won the right to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup and automatically became the host of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup as well.

The 2017 Federations Cup organizing committee is chaired by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Russian Football Union Vitaly Mutko.

Participants

National teams of Russia (the 2018 FIFA World Cup host), Germany (the winner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup), Portugal (the champion of the UEFA Euro 2016), Chile (the winner of the 2015 Copa America), Australia (the 2015 AFC Asian Cup winner; Football Federation Australia has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation since 2006), Mexico (the winner of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup; in October 2015, Mexico defeated the US (the champion of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup) in the play-off match for the right to represent CONCACAF in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup), New Zealand (the champion of the 2016 OFC Nations Cup) and Cameroon (the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winner) will take part in the tournament.

The current Confederations Cup holder, Brazil’s team, were knocked out of the 2015 Copa America in the quarter-finals and lost the opportunity to defend their title which they earned in 2013.

Stadiums

Four stadiums will host the Confederations Cup games: Spartak Stadium (located in Moscow; named “Otkritie Arena” in 2014, when it was opened, and renamed as “Spartak Stadium” for the time of the tournament), St Petersburg Stadium, Fisht Stadium and Kazan Arena. The tournament’s final will be held in St. Petersburg, whereas the third place play-off will be held in Moscow.

2017 Confederations Cup features

Ticket sales for the tournament began on November 8, 2016. After buying a tournament ticket, each football fan must obtain a fan identification document (Fan ID). Russia started issuing Fan IDs on February 1, 2017. A Fan ID provides access to the matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 and a free travel pass.

On May 1, 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order to change the visa scheme. Foreign tournament participants are granted ordinary humanitarian visas for multiple entries, whereas individuals who help to prepare and organize the Confederations Cup are granted ordinary multiple-entry business visas or ordinary multiple-entry work visas. Under Russian law, foreign spectators can enter the country visa-free, with only identification documents and a Fan ID. This regime will operate 72 hours ahead of the Confederations Cup’s first match and will be lifted on the day of the tournament’s last match (from June 14 to July 2, 2017).

During the tournament, FIFA plans to test the Hawk-Eye video assistant referee technology and a fourth substitution during extra time.

New Zealand striker Chris Wood will captain the squad after West Ham defender Winston Reid was forced out with a knee injury. Wood was top-scorer in England’s second-tier last season. Bill Tuiloma of Marseilles will be a stabilizing influence in midfield.

Salty Russia defenders Vasily Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich have both left, but their younger replacements have struggled. Fyodor Smolov is the main attacking threat, while fellow forward Alexander Kokorin wasn’t selected. Injuries have depleted the squad, with midfielders Alan Dzagoev and Roman Zobnin missing out, along with forward Artyom Dzyuba.

Russia and New Zealand will open the 2017 Confederations Cup on Saturday at Saint Petersburg Stadium.

The Group A first stage match will be Russia’s Confederations Cup debut, and it will come in front of a home crowd that has already sent thousands of fans to practices ahead of the tournament. If the team can handle the pressure of hosting, it has the chance to start off on the right foot against the Oceania champions. Russia has lost only once in its last five and is the favorite in the opener.

The All Whites are making their fourth appearance in the Confederations Cup, but are yet to tally a victory, recording just a single point in total. The underdogs will rely on striker Chris Wood to lead what has been a defensive squad.

“This is what we do all of the hard work for,” Wood told FIFA.com ahead of the Russia match. “This is why we play all of the hard games in the Islands. … The boys are raring to go and will be up for it.”

The pool also includes Portugal and Mexico, presenting what is likely to be a tough path for either Russia or New Zealand moving through these opening stages.

US Open Golf 2017 Live

We’ll be missing the top three players in the world for this weekend’s U.S. Open finish, but it’ll hardly be without major storylines. Perhaps it’ll even be golf’s most captivating star playing the main role come Sunday evening.

Rickie Fowler owned the headlines for most of the first two days at Erin Hills, but it’s a crowded leaderboard atop America’s national championship. Through two rounds, two Americans — Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman — share the lead alongside two Englishmen — Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood — at 7-under par. Fowler seemed as if he was on cruise control for the first nine on Friday, holding the lead at 9-under par, before making his first three bogeys of the tournament on the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes and falling one behind the quartet of leaders.

Let’s get to the other major notes from a long day on the Kettle Moraine.

Hideki Golf is beautiful

Have you ever seen something so beautiful, so magical, so majestic.

Let’s start with a simple, bold statement: Hideki Matsuyama played the best round of golf I’ve ever seen in person on Friday. Not talking most impactful round, or biggest moment, or even score. I followed Fowler, Matsuyama, and Jon Rahm for a good chunk of the day on Friday — and I’ve never seen a dude hit so many shots just on the screws. It was a clinical dissection of a brutally large golf course. A show. A concerto. Joga bonito.

It’s not often a guy turns in a 7-under 65 in the US Open and we’re talking about how it could’ve gone better. But he still had a number of near-misses with the putter that could’ve put us into beyond-Johnny territory. Just one shot off the tournament record to par. Historical. That’s the type of performance Matsuyama put forward on Friday. What should be scary for the rest of the golf world is just how typical such a performance could be from the Japanese star all the time.

After early exits from Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day, he’ll be the highest-ranked player remaining in the field this weekend. Don’t be shocked if he takes home the title come Sunday night.

History! But the bad kind

Since the inception of the Official World Golf Ranking, never had the top three players in the world all missed the cut at the same major. That’s now no longer the case.

Despite all the lip service about how Erin Hills’ length might play to their advantage, Johnson, McIlroy, and Day will all exit stage right before the weekend begins. In fact, only four of the world’s top ten players made the cut at Erin Hills — Matsuyama, Fowler, Sergio Garcia, and Jordan Spieth. Woof.

For McIlroy, the struggles came as a surprise — even after his injury layoff.

“You play 54 holes around here before the golf tournament, I felt really, really comfortable. I drove the ball well, my irons were good. Everything was in good shape,” McIlroy said. “But you never really know until you put a card in your hand and you’re under the gun little bit. And some of the weaknesses and flaws that are in my game at the minute showed up over the last couple of days. It’s good to see those and see what needs to be worked on.”

A quick note about Jon Rahm’s “antics”

Start here: Jon Rahm is a star. He’s a future superstar, a huge talent, and he’s going to win majors. Multiple.

Having said that, there’s been a bit of talk growing louder and louder about the 22-year-old’s on-course antics when things turn south. The Spaniard struggled alongside Fowler and Matsuyama, and he got rather demonstrative through the course of the round. I watched him club toss, moan, and struggle through most of the front nine, with an outburst on the seventh tee sticking out in my mind. Kevin Van Valkenburg caught this later in the round

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to the hurt business today (Sat., June 17, 2017) for UFC Fight Night 111 live from inside Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. The UFC Fight Pass event, which will be headlined by a hard-hitting women’s Bantamweight scrap between former division champion Holly Holm taking on one-time title contender, Bethe Correia, will also feature a co-main event between Andrei Arlovski and Marcin Tybura, which will be contested at Heavyweight.

Who is fighting tonight at UFC Fight Night 111? Holly Holm vs Bethe Correia is the main event.
When does UFC Fight Night 111 start? Today (Sat., June 17, 2017), beginning at 4 a.m. ET on UFC Fight Pass.
Where will UFC Fight Night 111 take place? Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
How can I watch UFC Fight Night 111? Main card start time at 8 a.m ET on Fight Pass. “Prelims” undercard on Fight Pass start time at 4 a.m. ET.

What’s Hot:

Holly Holm is a star, and despite suffering a three-fight losing streak, “The Preacher’s Daughter” managed to nab headlining duties; for better or worse. If you ask me, it’s for the best. Holm is indeed a much better fighter than her current skid shows, and since Ronda Rousey is likely done with fighting, the women’s 135-pound weight class needs as many stars as it can get. Furthermore, since current women’s Featherweight champion Germain de Randamie — who defeated Holm, in her last outing refuses to defend her belt against Cris Cyborg — Holly is looking pretty good, as she would’ve likely taken the bout against the fearsome striker. An impressive win against Correia will breathe life into Holly’s combat career, and if her coach had his way, another shot at reclaiming her strap.

One of the bouts I’m most looking forward to on this card is the Welterweight matchup between Colby Covington and Dong Hyun Kim. Covington is one of the brightest prospects in the game today, though he hasn’t exactly been given the chance to show it all (according to this). Winner of three straight and 11 of 12 overall, “Chaos” has the chance to put his money where his mouth is as he faces off against longtime a veteran like Kim. “Stun Gun” has somewhat fallen off people’s radars in a very busy 170-pound weight class. But, the fact remains, Kim’s last defeat came against current division champion Tyron Woodley. With that loss, Kim has gone 7-1 in his last eight fights, which is good enough to keep him warm a the No. 7 spot on he official rankings. A win for either man will give them a big career boost, as Dong can soar up the rankings, while Colby can perhaps finally earn a spot in the top 15.

What’s Not:

Timing is everything, and the fact that this fight card starts so early in the morning doesn’t do it any favors, and it’s on Fight Pass. That means, unfortunately for the promotion, not a ton of people will be tuning in to catch the live broadcast, in my opinion.

Original Card vs. Actual Card:

Jonathan Meunier was lined up to face Li Jingliang. But, Meunier suffered an injury, was removed from the card and then replaced by Octagon newcomer Frank Camacho. Other than that, the Fight Pass event didn’t change too much since it was announced.

Injuries:

Other than Meunir’s setback, all other fighters scheduled to take part at the event somehow managed to avoid the injury bug.

New Blood:

Rolando Dy, Frank Camacho and Ji Yeon Kim will all make their promotional debuts at the Fight Pass event, but the intriguing bout is one between Naoki Inoue (10-0) and Carls John de Tomas (6-0), who will put their undefeated streaks on the line when they face off against one another in their Octagon debuts.

How The “Prelims” Look:

We have a lot of newcomers on the undercard, with a couple of name veterans sprinkled in to make it interesting. Chief among them is Takanori Gomi, who will look to end his three-fight losing streak when he faces off against a very game Jon Tuck. Alex Caceres will also look to get back into the win column when he welcomes Rolando Dy into the Octagon. As mentioned above, Naoki Inoue and Carls John de Tomas will put their respective undefeated streaks on the line in a battle of proven flyweights. Rarely do you get two newcomers going up against each other, it’s even more rare that they are both perfect in their MMA careers.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

When you look at the main card, there are plenty of athletes who could use a victory. Andrei Arlovski, however, needs a win in the worst way. After returning to UFC back in 2014 with four straight victories, “The Pitbull” has dropped four in a row. Sure, it’s been against some of the best the division has to offer, but losing four in a row is never good for anyone, especially an aging veteran who is hanging on by a thread. What’s worse, Arlovski has been finished — violently — in all four defeats.

Interest Level: 6/10

The main card is average at best, but we do get to see former UFC Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos makes his 170-pound debut when he takes on standup specialist Tarec Saffiedine. Both men need a win, and bad, as they have each suffered back-to-back losses, so you know they’re going to come out firing.

Holm will look to show that she is far from done and potentially earn herself yet another shot at the strap. For Bethe, a win over a former champion could be the signature win she’s been looking for. As for Arlovski, his UFC career is barely hanging on, and if he suffers his fifth straight defeat I wouldn’t be shocked if UFC parts ways with him one final time. There are a lot of reasons for fighters to get a win, other than the obvious, which could make for another unexpected interesting night of fights.

It has become incredibly rare in recent years to find two boxers universally ranked in the top five pound-for-pound, who compete in the same division and — wait for it — are willing to fight each other.

It’s even more rare when they get to do it a second time with just as much at stake.

Seven months after Andre Ward scored a controversial victory by unanimous decision over fellow unbeaten Sergey Kovalev, the world’s best light heavyweights will do it again on Saturday, June 17, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas (HBO PPV, 9 p.m. ET). Tickets for the fight are still available on Stubhub.com for around $63 to get in the door.

Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) attempts to prove that the trio of judges who scored the first bout 114-113 in favor of Ward did so in error. The native of Russia, who cried robbery in defeat, has vowed to be more aggressive in hopes of removing the judges from the equation.
