It’s hockey royalty versus a true upstart in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

The Pittsburgh Penguins represent the former, with four Stanley Cups in their history—including the most recent—the second-seeded team in this year’s playoffs and featuring the great Sidney Crosby.

The latter are the Nashville Predators—an eighth-seed upstart—a franchise that’s only existed since 1998 and hails from a rather non-traditional hockey town but has nevertheless proved itself to be an undeniable force in these playoffs.

The Penguins have clearly been here before, while the Predators are newcomers to anything beyond the second round of the playoffs. They make for a great contrast in competition, and the finals should be an entertaining affair as a result.

NHL Finals matchup

On one side of the matchup will be the defending NHL Champions from 2016, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The team finished out their regular season with a record of 50-21-11 record along with a points differential of 48. The Penguins had one series which they handled with ease on their side of the brackets, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 in the first round. However, the next two rounds went the distance. Pittsburgh needed the full seven games to defeat Washington in the second round of the playoffs and then seven games to take out the Ottawa Senators en route to the finals.

The Nashville Predators are a surprising entry here in the Finals as they finished 41-29-12 in the Central Division which was fourth place behind St. Louis, Minnesota, and Chicago. However, Nashville fought through their NHL playoffs matchups to get here. In the first round, Nashville swept the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 and then defeated the St.

After playing every other day throughout the NHL Eastern Conference Final, the Pittsburgh Penguins will have one extra day to prepare for the Nashville Predators in the Stanley Cup Final.

After going into double overtime in their seventh game with the Ottawa Senators Thursday night, that’s a good thing for head coach Mike Sullivan’s defending champions.

The Penguins were pushed to the limit by an upstart Senators team that featured superb play from defenseman Erik Karlsson and goaltender Craig Anderson, as well as solid contributions from the team’s role players.
